The historical drama will exclusively release its entire fourth season in theaters throughout the month of February before it hits streaming services

Millions already know Jesus’ arduous path to his crucifixion, but in the case of The Chosen, that doesn’t make it any less compelling to watch.

The historical drama, which returns for a fourth season that will be released exclusively in theaters on Feb. 1, will pick up where the season 3 finale left off. After preaching to a crowd of more than 5,000 people in Galilee and performing a miracle by walking on water, Jesus’ (Jonathan Roumie) actions increasingly anger Jewish authorities.

In PEOPLE's exclusive look at the season 4 teaser, Jesus finds himself alone on a vast empty plain.

“It’s time,” he says. "Listen carefully to my words."

The teaser cuts to the biblical figure putting his arms around two men, before a group of Roman soldiers approaches Jesus and his followers on a dirt road.

Following brief snippets of a Jewish leader speaking to other leaders and a dancer twirling in slow-motion, Jesus is seen speaking to a crowd hanging on his every word.

“My followers won’t understand,” Jesus continues. "The son of man must suffer many things."

The scene cuts to a barefoot Jesus, bound and chained, being dragged by Roman soldiers through a dark, dirty corridor. "But you are the son of God," one man responds off-camera.

In the next scenes, Mary Magdalene (Elizabeth Tabish) peers into an empty tomb, and Judas Iscariot (Luke Dimyan) stares at the 30 pieces of silver in his hand he received for betraying Jesus and revealing his identity to the Romans.

"I know it's hard," another man adds in a voiceover. "Man makes it much harder when he leans on his own understanding."

As a montage of brief moments flash by — Jesus’ followers merrily playing instruments together, an ancient horse-drawn carriage racing against the sunset, and a man blowing out a torch — the show’s title finally appears.

To celebrate the release of The Chosen’s fourth season, its creator and director, Dallas Jenkins, plans to exclusively release the full season in theaters — a move that expands upon last season’s strategy of screening the premiere and finale episodes together in theaters, as well.

“Every time we’ve dipped our toes in the theatrical waters, viewers have overwhelmingly told us they want more," Jenkins says in a press release. "After seeing the Season 4 episodes, we knew we’d be doing our fans a disservice if we denied them the chance to see them all on a big screen with others they can laugh and cry with."

The Chosen's theatrical rollout of season 4 in theaters will start with a two-week run of episodes 1-3 on Feb. 1, followed by episodes 4-6 in theaters starting Feb. 15. Finally, episodes 7 and 8 will debut in theaters beginning Feb. 29. After its theatrical run, The Chosen's fourth season will make its way to streaming platforms.
