‘CHiPs,’ ‘Future Man,’ ‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ Win California Location Awards
The upcoming “CHiPs” movie and the TV series “Future Man” and “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” have won honors at the 22nd annual California on Location Awards.
The awards were presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, produced by the Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS). The honors recognize location managers, public employees, and other professionals who help facilitate on location production in California.
Finalists and winners are determined via a vote by members of FLICS, past COLA winners, and a steering committee of Teamsters Local 399 members.
Location manager Rick Schuller was honored in the feature film studio category for “CHiPs,” starring Dax Shepard and Michael Pena and based on the 1970s TV series. The movie received a $5.1 million tax credit under California’s expanded incentive program.
“CHiPs” was selected over a pair of thrillers — Ben Affleck’s “Live by Night” and “Unforgettable,” starring Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson. Warner Bros. has set a release date of Aug. 11, 2017, for “CHiPs.”
Location manager J.J. Levine received the award in the half-hour series category for Hulu’s “Future Man,” starring Josh Hutcherson. It won over “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Those Who Can’t.”
“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” won in the one-hour category for location manager Justin Hill. It was selected over “Westworld” and “Rosewood.”
Location manager Michael Wesley was honored in the independent feature film category for Christopher Guest’s mockumentary “Mascots,” which was released on Netflix in October.
“The Circle”, starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, won Location Team of the Year for Independent Features for Edward Mazurek and Scott Trimble.
The program also included the presentation of the Signature Award to California Film Commission executive director Amy Lemisch, who oversees the production tax credit program.
“No one has been a better partner and champion for filming in California than Amy Lemisch,” said COLA co-chair and Imperial County film commissioner Charla Teeters. “Amy has worked tirelessly to facilitate production and ensure California remains competitive. She somehow manages to blend fierce tenacity with heartfelt kindness – a combination that makes her uniquely effective. She is California’s best weapon in the fight against runaway production, and we can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
Other awards went to State Farm Insurance and Frank Yoshikane in the commercials category; “Amazing Race, Final Season” and Deven Chierighino in the reality TV category; and “The Odyssey” and Chris Gutierrez in the music video category.
The city award went to the City of Placerville and Steve Youel. The county trophy was presented to the El Dorado Sherriff’s Office and Deputy Joshua Bisantz. The state honor went to State Parks and James Valdez. The federal award was given to the Bureau of Land Management and Elaine Hanson.
