Chip Gaines Tells His Kids Why the Name Magnolia is Tied to 'One of Mama and I's First Dates'

Forget shiplap! This is Chip and Joanna Gaines’ real signature style statement.

The final episode of Fixer Upper airs on Tuesday, April 3, and while the hearts of HGTV fans everywhere are broken, the couple isn’t leaving without a few more adorable Gaines family moments to hold onto.

In a sweet sneak peek of the finale, Chip tells their kids Drake, 12, Ella, 11, Duke, 9, and Emmie Kay, 7 the sentimental story behind their thriving business’s name.

“You know what’s interesting about a magnolia tree?” he asks his mini construction crew after requesting their help in planting the greenery on their show’s last project. “One of mama and I’s first dates I climbed up a magnolia tree and I pulled her off a magnolia bloom and I gave it to her.”

The gesture has only become more sentimental over the years. The flower serves as the emblem of their home improvement empire — from their popular Magnolia Market attraction in Waco, to the Magnolia Journal magazine.

“We love magnolia trees. It really embodies our company. It’s basically become our mascot,” Chip says. “So every project we do, we love to plant a magnolia gem.”

Not only does it pay homage to their humble beginnings, but it’s no doubt also a favorite for resident plant lady, Joanna, who often enlists her kids for assistance in their own newly designed garden as well as on projects for the show.

The contractor-designer duo announced in September that their four kids (and another on the way!) were the main reason this fifth season of their hit show was going to be their last.

“Our beautiful children are growing up so quickly. Drake is almost a teenager,” Joanna said at the time. “So I think the idea that we get to step back and just get fresh vision, get some rest, but also just hunker down with our kiddos is something that we’re excited about.”
