‘Children Reflect Their Parents,” Dr. Phil Tells Mom Whose 13-Year-Old Acts Out

Sumyr says her 13-year-old son, Ash, is out of control. She says that she and her partner, Wayne, live in “constant chaos” with Ash and claims that he goes into rage – hitting, biting, and punching – if he’s told "No." After watching video of Ash’s behavior and his interactions with Wayne, Dr. Phil tells the parents that he thinks the problems lie more with them than the teen. “My experience is, generally, that children don’t have problems, parents do, and that children reflect their parents,” Dr. Phil tells Sumyr. “You are his mother, and when you say mean, horrible, hateful, rejecting things, you change who he is forevermore.” Hear more from Dr. Phil in the video above. On Thursday’s episode, "Out of Control or Provoked!?," hear why Sumyr’s mother says she blames Sumyr for Ash’s behavior. Is Ash out of control or provoked by his mother?
