Child reportedly injured after jumping out of Disney's new “Zootopia” ride

The company posted a message about the new attraction's closure and stressed compliance with park rules when experiencing the ride.

A child was reportedly injured in an accident while riding Shanghai Disneyland's new Zootopia-themed ride, days after the attraction opened to the public.

Disney posted a message Monday on the Chinese park's website, indicating that the new Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride had reopened following a short closure after, according to several social media posts, a child exited the ride vehicle while the attraction was in motion.

Images taken on site and posted to X — which EW hasn't included in this story due to their graphic nature — appear to show a child laying on the floor next to the ride vehicle's tire, with blood on the left side of their head. Video footage also appears to show a child standing amid the ride's show sequences while other vehicles move around them.

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride at Shanghai Disneyland

"Zootopia: Hot Pursuit will resume operations this morning. All guests are required to comply with the resort’s operational guidelines as they experience the attraction," the park's statement read, referencing park rules that mandate riders to remain inside ride vehicles at all times. "Please also note that in the opening phase, pauses and downtimes may occur from time to time in Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. In the event of a downtime, guests should follow onsite cast members' instructions. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our guests during this opening period."

When reached for comment, Disney pointed EW to the message on Shanghai Disneyland's website. EW will update this post with more information as it becomes available.

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit features a trackless ride system that sees the large passenger vehicles traveling through an open circuit without a traditional track guiding them through the course, similar to the ride system used on the Rise of the Resistance Star Wars-themed rides operating at both the Walt Disney World resort in Florida and the Disneyland resort in California.

The incident at Shanghai Disneyland recalls other recent happenings at Disney parks around the world, including in November when a guest stripped naked and ran through the course of Disneyland's classic It's a Small World boat ride, and in May when a young woman jumped out of a moving boat on Splash Mountain.

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit officially opened on Dec. 20, alongside Shanghai Disneyland's City of Zootopia land inspired by the world of the 2016 blockbuster animated film, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 2017 Academy Awards.

In addition to Shanghai Disneyland's Zootopia attractions, the company teased at the Destination D23 event in September that a Zootopia-style show might soon replace the It's Tough to be a Bug short film attraction currently playing at Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
