Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reacts to Rihanna headlining Super Bowl halftime show

The Kansas City Chiefs are focused on making another trip to the Super Bowl after coming up short last season. The pageantry and history of the big game have made it a tradition for everyone around the country to tune in for the battle of the NFL’s best.

A special part of the game is the halftime show, which features iconic names in music from every genre to celebrate football’s annual tradition. The Super Bowl performer for next February’s contest is an international icon, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Rihanna was announced as the halftime performer this past Sunday in collaboration with Roc Nation and Apple Music for Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona.

Speaking to Carrington Harrison on 610 Sports Radio show “The Drive” for his weekly check-in, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts on Rihanna being announced as the Super Bowl halftime performer.

“Rihanna has a lot of bangers,” said Mahomes. “Brittany (Mahomes) was pretty hyped about (her performing at the Super Bowl Halftime show). She’s a legend as well. Hopefully, we can be in the game and record it and watch it afterward. I have not met Rihanna – she’s one of the greatest to do it.”

Mahomes’ two Super Bowl appearances featured halftime performances from Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in Miami and The Weeknd in Tampa Bay.

Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend was also intrigued by the Rihanna announcement. He tweeted his thoughts on her handling of the football in her promotional photo that was shared during the announcement.

“Textbook punt “handshake” grip by @rihanna,” Townsend wrote. “I’d like to see a little more space between the ball and palm and nose turned slightly in but looks solid. Bombs away, babe.”

The Chiefs would prefer to have the music of Rihanna entertaining thousands of fans while they are in the locker room rather than sitting at home watching the game. There’s still a long way to go in the regular season before thinking about appearing in Super Bowl LVI. Next up, the Chiefs will get a chance to face the Buccaneers, who defeated them in their last Super Bowl appearance.
