Chiefs Ex-Assistant Coach Britt Reid Has Sentence Commuted After Severely Injuring Young Girl in DUI Crash

The son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was originally sentenced to prison for three years over the incident in November 2022

Britt Reid, the son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, has had his DUI sentence shortened three years after severely injuring a young girl in a car crash.

The ex-assistant coach, 37, was granted the commutation by Missouri Gov. Mike Parsons last month, according to a press release from the politician's office.

Britt received a three-year prison sentence in November 2022 after pleading guilty to driving while impaired during a crash on Feb. 4, 2021, that injured Ariel Young, then 5, and other victims.

Speaking about the sentence shortening, Parsons’ office said in a statement, per CNN, “Mr. Reid has completed his alcohol abuse treatment program and has served more prison time than most individuals convicted of similar offenses.”

“Mr. Reid will be under house arrest until October 31, 2025, with strict conditions of probation, including weekly meetings with a parole officer, weekly behavioral counseling attendance, weekly meetings with a peer support sponsor, and stringent community service and employment requirements," the statement added.

In February 2021, Britt was driving his pickup truck near GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City when he struck two vehicles stationed along the highway. One, which was a disabled silver Chevrolet Traverse, contained Ariel and a second child seated in the back, who were both injured.

The other child, then 4, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Ariel, meanwhile, suffered severe brain trauma and went into a coma that lasted 11 days.

Britt was also injured in the crash. He admitted to police at the time to drinking prior to getting behind the wheel.

After receiving his sentencing, attorney Tom Porto shared in a statement to PEOPLE, "The victims of this crime are outraged the Defendant was not sentenced to the maximum sentence allowable by law. No amount of prison time will ever be enough to punish the Defendant for the pain and suffering he caused this family and the ongoing difficulties that Ariel will continue to endure for the rest of her life. She will endure. She will strive and she will thrive. She is Ariel strong."

Porto added, "The family is relieved this matter is over."

Ariel's mother added in a victim's statement to Britt in court at the time, per ABC News: "Ariel's life is forever changed because of Britt Reid. Her life will be dealing with the damage that Britt Reid did.”

She detailed the impact of her daughter’s injuries, sharing that Ariel needed "special ed” and was having difficulty walking.

Following the incident in 2021, the Chiefs placed Britt on administrative leave, according to CNN. He didn’t sign a new contract with the team the following year.

Britt was previously sentenced in 2007 to eight to 23 months in prison for a road-rage incident in Pennsylvania, as he waved a handgun at a motorist, ESPN reported at the time.

That same year, Britt also pleaded guilty to DUI and drug charges after driving his vehicle into a shopping cart in a sporting goods store's parking lot.
