Chiefs' Andy Reid suspends CB Marcus Peters after flag-throwing incident
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced on Wednesday that he is suspending standout cornerback Marcus Peters for the team’s game against the Oakland Raiders this Sunday.
Peters will not be paid for this week, and Reid is not allowing Peters to practice either.
It’s a strong move from Reid, whose team is in a three-way fight for the AFC West with Oakland and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Reid did not clarify whether it was the flag toss, walkoff or both that earned Peters the suspension. He also said he spoke with veteran players about his decision on Wednesday morning, but had already made up his mind about the punishment when he spoke with them.
Peters returned to the field several minutes after leaving, but was not wearing his uniform socks with his cleats. He did not play again.
Peters is an Oakland native, so not playing against his hometown team will likely add to the message being sent by Reid. The game is in Kansas City.
After a 5-0 start, the Chiefs have lost six of their last seven games, including a current four-game losing streak. Despite that, they would be the AFC West winners if the season ended today.
