'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' Trailer Brings Back Rocky and Ginger 23 Years After First Movie

'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' begins streaming on Netflix Dec. 15

Chicken Run is back!

On Tuesday, Netflix debuted the first trailer for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, which serves as a sequel to the original 2000 claymation film.

Thandiwe Newton leads a new voice cast as Ginger, while Zachary Levi portrays Rocky and The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey plays the couple's daughter, Molly. The trailer meets Ginger and Rocky as Ginger prepares to lead a mission to break into a chicken farm rather than break out of one, as the group did in the original movie.

Though some appear to doubt whether or not Ginger can pull off the latest mission, the chickens seem determined as ever to break into the high-security farm — until they re-encounter the villainous Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson), who returns after attempting to bake the chickens into pies in the original film.

The new movie comes from Aardman Animations, the studio behind Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, and director Sam Fell, who made 2012's ParaNorman and 2006's Flushed Away. (A new Wallace and Gromit movie is also coming to Netflix in 2024.)

"Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy's farm, Ginger has finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world," reads an official synopsis for the movie.

"When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger's happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they're breaking in."

The voice cast also includes Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson, David Bradley, Jane Horrocks, Romesh Ranganathan, Daniel Mays, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, Peter Serafinowicz and Nick Mohammed.

In the original movie, Mel Gibson voiced Rocky and Julia Sawalha played Ginger. News of the sequel was first announced in June 2020.

Director Fell called the film's villain Mrs. Tweedy "one of the all-time greats" in a statement as he shared his impression of working with Richardson, 65, for the role decades after she originally voiced the character.

"Now she’s out to take industrial-scale revenge on all chicken-kind with the Dawn of the Nugget," he said of Mrs. Tweedy's intentions in the new film. "We’ve had so much fun working with Miranda Richardson to transform Melisha Tweedy into the ultimate 1960’s super-villain."
