‘Chicago Med’ Showrunner Change: Andrew Dettmann Exits NBC Series

There’s been a switch at the helm of NBC’s upcoming drama series Chicago Med, the latest offshoot in Wolf Films/Universal TV’s successful Chicago Fire franchise. CSI alum Andrew Dettmann — who was brought in as executive producer/showrunner in June, after the planted spinoff episode of Chicago Fire that introduced the new series — is leaving. The change is sudden as Dettmann appeared with the cast and the other Chicago Med executive producers at the show’s TCA panel a week ago.

Dettmann was the first showrunner outside of the core Chicago creative team of Dick Wolf, Matt Olmstead, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas to be given in a leadership role on the franchise. The departure, which comes a month before the show is slated to go into production, is a result of creative differences. It is unclear whether the Chicago team will reach to its bench for a new Chicago Med showrunner or hire an outside replacement.

“Andrew Dettmann won’t be continuing as an executive producer on Chicago Med,” NBC and Universal TV said in a statement. “The network and studio value their relationship with Andy and plan to continue to work on other projects together.”

Chicago Med is described as an emotional thrill ride through the day-to-day chaos of the city’s most explosive hospital and the courageous team of doctors who hold it together. The series’ regular cast includes Oliver Platt, S. Epatha Merkerson, Nick Gehlfuss, Colin Donnell, Torrey DeVitto, Rachel DiPillo, Brian Tee and Yaya Dacosta.

Several new drama series have undergone showrunner changes this summer as freshmen are looking to find their footing. The list includes ABC’s The Catch and Blood & Oil.
