The Chi Will See a Major Death Before the End of Season 6: ‘Sadness for Everyone,’ Stars Tease

The South Side of Chicago will be down multiple residents by the end of this season, The Chi bosses tell TVLine.

In a recent interview, showrunners Justin Hillian and Jewel Coronel shared that viewers will see more than one big death in the back half of Season 6, which returned Sunday. (Read a recap.) And because the executive producers wouldn’t say exactly which characters are heading to that big Smokey’s in the sky, we asked Luke James and Jacob Latimore for their (spoiler-free) thoughts on the matter.

“I think it’s going to be sadness for everyone,” James said regarding how viewers would feel about at least one of the losses. Latimore added that the cast found out about the deaths when they opened their scripts. “Even reading at the table read, we were just, ‘Oh, wow,'” he recalls. “We could just feel what the audience is going to feel.”

Some members of the Showtime series’ cast have been around since the beginning, James pointed out, which lends the show a weight and history that makes on-screen losses particularly tough to bear. “Especially if you’ve taken the journey since Season 1, when these things happen, it’s going to hit you as if you’re inside of this world, this universe,” he said.
