Chevy Chase Unloads on Community Experience: ‘The Show Wasn’t Funny Enough For Me’

Chevy Chase — who was fired from NBC’s Community in 2012 in the wake of multiple controversies — is reflecting on his tumultuous run on the beloved sitcom, scorched-Earth style.

In an interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, the actor — who played unlovable curmudgeon Pierce on the NBC/Yahoo sitcom — said of his time on the Dan Harmon-created show: “I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained…  Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard hitting enough for me.”

Asked if he took issue with the character Pierce, Chase said, “I didn’t mind the character. I just felt that it was… I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.”

Chase’s decade-ago Community exit came in the wake of the actor allegedly dropping the N-word in the presence of co-stars Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover. He was also embroiled in a much-publicized battle with Harmon.

Regarding the status of his relationship with Harmon, Chase revealed that he hasn’t “seen him since” Harmon was ousted from the show ahead of Season 4. “I have no idea if we’re OK,” he continued. “I’ve never been not OK. He’s kind of a pisser.”

Last year, Harmon was asked if Chase would make a cameo in the forthcoming Community revival movie on Peacock. “I don’t even know if it’s legal for him to come back,” the EP told our sister pub Variety at the time. “That may be out of my hands. There may something I sign for with an insurance company.”
