Chesterfield County Fair begins this week: Rodeo, games, rides, music, silent auction...

CHESTERFIELD — The 112th Chesterfield County Fair begins this Friday, and the excitement continues through Saturday, Sept. 2.

Attractions include games, carnival food, rides, animal exhibits, antique tractors, ax throwing, a power wheel derby, pig races, a horse show, a comedy hypnotist, a magic show, a petting zoo, a rodeo, bingo, parades, a beauty pageant, live music and much more.

A silent auction to benefit the Chesterfield County Fair Association Scholarship fund begins on opening day. All donated items will be on display at the fair. The online auction will be hosted by Grindstaff Auction Services. All funds raised will go toward Chesterfield County High School seniors who graduate in June 2024. Year to date, over $11,000 has been raised.

One never knows what you might see at a fair. Last year, I spotted Anna Espinoza of Henrico, Va. enjoying the annual event with her cockatiels. Tiki Wiki was on her shoulder, and Sweetie was on her finger.

Ladies ages 17-22 will compete in a pageant at the Fair. The interview and on-stage competition will be held on Monday, August 28.

Families can step back in time and take a trip through Heritage Village to observe the likes of a blacksmith, glass blower, broom maker and salt maker.

"My daughter Allyson was excited to tour the tepee. She can't wait to go back to Saint Joseph Catholic School to tell Mr. Syzmendera and Mrs. Harris all about it," Melissa Wilkins of Petersburg said at the 2022 Fair.

Allyson, age 10 at the time, also rode a camel at the Fair.

"We walked by the camel, and my mom said, 'You wanna ride a camel?' I was like, 'Yeah, I wanna ride a camel.' Then, I got on, and it was so exciting. I loved it. It was amazing!"

Admission is $12 for adults, $7 for seniors age 60 and up, $6 for children between 4 and 12 and free for age 3 and under. Admission tickets are sold online and at the gate. Ride tickets are sold online and at the Fair.

Public Safety Day is Saturday, Aug. 26. All Chesterfield County first responders with a county ID get in free. On Sunday, August 27, all retired and active military with a military ID get in free for Military Appreciation Day. On Kid's Day Monday, Aug. 28, admission for children ages 4-12 is half price.

The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds are located at 10300 Courthouse Road in Chesterfield. Catch the fun August 26 - September 2 from 5 - 11 p.m. Monday - Friday and 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sunday. On Friday, September 1, it will operate from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.
