Cherry Stephens looks back on her very first title win.

2022 marked a significant milestone for Cherry Stephen’s wrestling career. After emerging victorious in a triple threat number one contenders match in July 2022, Stephens moved on to challenge Mick Moretti for the Soul of PWA Championship in September. As an added bonus, this title match was contested at a PWA event specially named after Stephens — PWA Black Label Cherry’s All That!

Despite feeling some initial nervousness, Stephens eventually pushed past it to defeat Moretti and claim the Soul of PWA Championship, marking the first title win of her career. Speaking with WrestleZone’s Ella Jay, Stephens recounted this milestone moment.

“It was a battle, and at the time, Mick was holding like five or six [title] belts across Australia. That’s really intimidating, but I had proven myself by winning the Key to the Card and getting that championship opportunity. So I felt like I deserved it. Whether I was going to come out with the title or not, just getting there was a huge accomplishment. Then to come out with the title was mind-blowing. It was really, really special,” Stephens said.

Stephens’ title win meant so much to her that she even got the word “soul” tattooed (stylized in Japanese) on her upper arm.

“I feel the support that everyone has for Cherry. I felt like it wasn’t just a win for me. It was a win for everyone as well, because everyone has elevated me to get to that point,” Stephens said. “It wasn’t just me all by myself, it was my trainers and everyone at the school. I even got a tattoo recently and it says ‘soul’ in Japanese. So even though I don’t have [the title] anymore, holding it and winning it had such an impact on me. I want to remember that.”

Following her victory against Mick Moretti, Stephens successfully defended the Soul of PWA Championship against the likes of Kai Drake, Jimmy Townsend, and Michael Spencer before losing it to Unsocial Jordan in June 2023.
