My Chemical Romance returns with new six-minute song, filling fans with 'genuine happiness'

No, it’s not 2006, but it might as well be. Emo rock darlings My Chemical Romance are back with new music for the first time in nearly a decade.

The band dropped a new single “The Foundations of Decay” on Thursday, their first major release since their 2014 song "Fake Your Death." Lead singer Gerard Way’s moody, distorted vocals open the six-minute track, swelling into an explosive chorus.

"Let our bodies lay while our hearts will stay/ Let our blood invade if I die in pain," Way sings. "Now if your convictions were a passing phase, may our ashes feed the river in the morning rays. And as the vermin crawls, we lay in the foundations of decay."

Produced by Way, Doug McKean and lead guitarist Ray Toro, "The Foundations of Decay" marks a new era for MCR following their 2013 split and as they prepare to launch their highly anticipated reunion tour, kicking off in the U.K. on May 16 and in North America on August 20.

In fall 2019, the group announced their return and got back together for a reunion performance in December.

Of course, MCR fans were ecstatic over the new song. Many took to social media to show their love for the multiplatinum band's latest release.

“my chemical romance dropping new music in 2022 might actually save this decade,” Twitter user @iNabber69 wrote.

“i legitimately don’t know how i’m supposed to recover from the fact that my chemical romance just randomly dropped their first new song in almost a decade,” @kissofviolence tweeted.

“did it hurt? when my chemical romance released an absolute banger out of nowhere and made us all go completely insane?,” Twitter user @ourphantoms wrote.

“i’ve always talked about how insane it would be to listen to a my chemical romance song for the first time and not know the lyrics after being a fan for so long and the fact that i’m doing that right now has me sobbing,” @projektgerard tweeted. “i love them so much.”

“thank you my chemical romance im actually no longer depressed this is genuine happiness filling my body,” Twitter user @scareghoul wrote.

The band, best known for the hits "Welcome To The Black Parade," "Helena" and "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," split in 2013 after more than a decade together. MCR’s last album, “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,” peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s rock albums chart and spawned the top 5 rock single “Sing.”

"Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing,” the group said in a statement in March 2013. “We've gotten to go places we never knew we would. We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible.

“We've shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends" the band continued. “And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure."

The band has also been tapped for festival lineups this year, including the 10th anniversary of the Firefly Music Festival in September and The When We Were Young festival in October, playing alongside acts such as Green Day, Dua Lipa and Paramore.
