Alice Randall's forthcoming "My Black Country" album and memoir, which will be released in the second week of April, promises to not only honor pioneering African-American artists in country music but also chronicle her own four-decade journey as a songwriter and publisher on Music Row. Two new musical releases also highlight innovative takes on key pieces of Randall's own songwriting catalog.

The "My Black Country" album will include a spoken-word rendition of "XXX's & OOO's," the first #1 country hit written by a Black woman, recorded by Trisha Yearwood in 1994.

Randall's legacy as one of Nashville's ultimate multi-hyphenates includes being an award-winning author who serves as Vanderbilt University's Andrew W. Mellon Chair in the Humanities.

Randall's daughter, Caroline Randall Williams, herself a renowned author and creative, is responsible for the reimagining.

"The original 'XXX's and OOO's came out when I was six years old. To me, at the time, my mom and her dear friend Matraca [Berg] had written the story of our lives: the single mom, the ups and downs of the world she was raising me to navigate, and somehow everyone knew our song, and loved it," Williams said via a press statement.

"Country music has always been a music for and from and of Black women,": she added. "It's a beautiful thing, some thirty years later, to watch the world catch up to that truth, and It's the biggest gift that I got to add a layer to the story the song tells. It's an homage, a celebration, a prayer, and a certainty."

Also, vaunted Americana artist Valerie June performs the Randall co-written song "Big Dream," originally recorded by Samantha Mathis in 1993.

The duo of performances is added alongside work guided by a collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens and Allison Russell, including Leyla McCalla, Sistastrings, Adia Victoria, Sunny War, Miko Marks, Saaneah and Rissi Palmer.

The tracks are produced by Ebonie Smith, whose credits include work on the "Hamilton" musical, plus acclaimed albums like Cardi B's "Invasion of Privacy," Janelle Monae's "Dirty Computer" and Sturgill Simpson's "A Sailor's Guide to Earth."

The entire LP is out on April 12 on Oh Boy Records, and Simon & Schuster will publish the memoir of the same name that week. Both are currently available for pre-order.

A press statement adds that "My Black Country" is "a celebration of overlooked history and a tribute to theessence of Country — a unique blend of Celtic, African influences, and evangelical Christianity."
