Apple Original Films has unveiled two official key art posters for “Killers of the Flower Moon," along with a new global theatrical release date for Martin Scorsese's eagerly awaited Oklahoma-made movie.

The posters dramatically spotlight the film's star trio: Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, both frequent stars of Scorsese's iconic films, as well as Native American actor Lily Gladstone, a Blackfeet and Nimíipuu (or Nez Perce) performer already earning Academy Awards buzz for her performance.

The key art debut came with news that Apple Original Films is altering its release strategy for the highly anticipated historical epic, widely considered an awards contender with blockbuster potential.

When will Oklahomans get to see 'Killers of the Flower Moon' in theaters?

In partnership with Paramount Pictures, Scorsese's fact-based Western will open in wide release simultaneously in theaters around the world on Oct. 20.

That's a change from the release strategy originally announced in spring. "Killers of the Flower Moon" was initially intended to open in limited release Oct. 6 and roll out to additional markets ahead of an Oct. 20 wide release.

Apple Original Films didn't detail the rationale for skipping the limited release and heading straight to a wide global launch. But current blockbusters "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" benefited from wide global releases this summer, even as the ongoing Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes continue to cause upheaval in Hollywood and force studios to rethink release strategies.

When will 'Killers of the Flower Moon' come to IMAX and streaming?

The Oct. 20 wide theatrical release of “Killers of the Flower Moon” also will include IMAX theaters, for which the film will be digitally remastered into the image and sound quality of the IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX Digital Remastering technology, according to a news release.

Following the film's global theatrical run, "Killers of the Flower Moon" will debut on Apple TV+. The date it will begin streaming still has not been announced.

What is 'Killers of the Flower Moon' about?

Filmed in Osage County and the surrounding area in 2021, Scorsese's film is adapted from David Grann's 2017 best-seller “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI" and is based on a dark chapter of Oklahoma history.

Like the National Book Award finalist, the film chronicles the serial murders of Osage Nation citizens in 1920s Oklahoma, after an oil boom made them wealthy. The string of brutal slayings became known as the "Reign of Terror" and led to an investigation by the then-fledgling FBI.

Directed by Scorsese with its screenplay co-written by Scorsese and Oscar winner Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump"), "Killers of the Flower Moon" co-stars Academy Award nominee Jesse Plemons and Indigenous actors Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion and Tantoo Cardinal.

It also features Academy Award winner Brendan Fraser, two-time Oscar nominee John Lithgow and acclaimed musicians Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell and Jack White.

Hailing from Apple Studios, “Killers of the Flower Moon” was produced alongside Imperative Entertainment, Sikelia Productions and Appian Way. Producers are Scorsese, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas and Daniel Lupi, with DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Adam Somner, Marianne Bower, Lisa Frechette, John Atwood, Shea Kammer and Niels Juul serving as executive producers.

The film made its world premiere in May at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with broad critical acclaim and an extended standing ovation. In July, Apple Studios hosted a private screening and star-studded event in Tulsa for Osage Nation citizens who worked on the eagerly anticipated film, as well as for tribal elders and leaders.

Ahead of its worldwide theatrical release, "Killers of the Flower Moon" also will screen as one of the headline galas at the 67th BFI London Film Festival, which is set for Oct. 4-15.

The British Film Institute unveiled Thursday the full lineup of its 2023 London festival, with Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn," Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s “The Kitchen," Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Todd Haynes’ “May December,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers," Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things" and Sam Fell's "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" also listed among the festival's headline galas.
