Before there was The Process, Joel Embiid was just a work in process. As a sophomore, Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy, the same prep school Ben Simmons attended. Embiid would later lead The Rock School to a Florida high school state championship, but this unearthed highlight video is a glimpse into the Cameroonian teen still finding his bearings in a more organized hoops environment with Montverde.

In 2012, Embiid was still just a raw, lanky 6-foot-9 prospect. To gain more playing experience, the 15-year-old big man was still getting run on the junior varsity squad. The glimpses of the Embiid we see today are still evident underneath his oversized jersey, but the court awareness, fundamentals and about 100 pounds are missing from his underdeveloped frame.

Until anyone discovers footage from Michael Jordan’s infamous JV season at Laney High School, Embiid may be the G.O.A.T. in JV basketball despite being a bit rough around the edges.
