Dance Away the Pounds

James Van Der Beek spent time dancing the night away and toning up on "Dancing With the Stars," until he was eventually booted.

Van Der Beek posted a before and after picture on his Instagram page showing some washboard abs and toned everything. Somehow you can see it in his face too.

"Fight training vs. dancing... I’d been training in Muay Thai three days a week for about six months (for the next project I’m writing) when I hit pause to dance six hours a day. Now I can rhumba," he says next to the photo.

All That Hard Work Paid Off

Fans were happy to see his transformation.

"You Rocked!!! Winner in my book voted. Continued prayers for you and family. Stay strong God Bless!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!! Know it is going to be hard," wrote josettebyrd.

"Man just in your face alone! You where the only reason I watched this season. Was fun to watch," said chefonamission.

Sean Spicer and Lauren Alaina have also posted pictures of their thinner physique, a side effect of learning these tough dances.

He Was Eventually Voted Off DWTS

Van Der Beek was voted off the show at the same time he revealed that his wife, Kimberly, lost their baby. He shared the news in a video message.

"My wife Kimberly and I went through every expecting parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby. The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond."

Van Der Beek has been trying to make sense of his personal tragedy and hoped to gain some insight from it all.

"You never know why these things happen, that’s what I’ve been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation.

It makes you more human."

It's a Process

Losing a baby to miscarriage can be a devastating event for a family, and Van Der Beek knows the grieving process has its own timetable.

"Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one.

Thank you to all of our friends and co-workers (and dance partners) who have shown up for us so beautifully during this time. As many of you have said, “There are no words...” and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today."

During Monday's season finale, Van Der Beek said he and Kimberly were "hanging in there."

"We have so much love and support and we appreciate it," he says.

He and Kimberly have five children: Gwendolyn, 1, Emilia, 3, Annabel, 5, Joshua, 7, and Olivia, 9.
