Chart Moves: One Direction’s Direction Is Up; Blake Shelton’s ‘Cool’ Atop Hot Country Songs; Mariah Carey Shows Off New ‘Home’

As previously reported, “Harlem Shake,” the viral smash from Brooklyn producer Baauer, spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Who else made notable moves on the Hot 100 and other song charts?
 
— One Direction: The vocal group roars 45-13 on the Hot 100 with its Comic Relief charity single “One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks).” A No. 5 start on Streaming Songs (5.1 million streams, up 1,109%, according to Nielsen BDS) and a 16-8 blast on Hot Digital Songs (135,000 downloads sold, up 26%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) spur the song’s vault. It also bests the No. 24 Hot 100 peak of Blondie’s original “One Way or Another” in 1979.
 
The band concurrently climbs to a fellow new peak with “Kiss You” (51-46), which, unlike “Way,” is being promoted to radio. It pushes 21-20 on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart.
 
— Alicia Keys: “Girl on Fire,” at No. 16 on the Hot 100, lifts 11-10 on the Adult Top 40 radio airplay chart, becoming the chart’s first top 10 that likewise reached the top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (where “Girl” rose to No. 2). The last such crossover hit? Keys’ own “No One” five years ago.
 
— Nelly: Marking the second-highest debut of his 33 Hot 100 hits (trailing only 2010’s No. 12-bowing “Just a Dream”), “Hey Porsche” rides in at No. 42. It launches on Hot Digital Songs at No. 15 (99,000). On the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, it motors 26-24.
 
— Emeli Sande: The multiple BRIT Award winner (Feb. 20) lands on the Hot 100 for the first time with “Next to Me” (No. 89). The song dented the Triple A and Adult R&B airplay charts last year. Now being reworked by Capitol, it enters Mainstream Top 40 at No. 37 and rises 23-20 on Adult Top 40.
 
— Blake Shelton: As Blake Shelton prepares the March 26 release of his 10th studio album, Based on a True Story, the set’s lead single “Sure Be Cool If You Did” becomes his 13th, and quickest, No. 1 on Hot Country Songs (eight weeks). The ballad is Shelton’s first leader since “Over” reigned for two weeks in September, a month before the ranking’s methodology changed from measuring core country radio audience to a streaming, digital download and an expanded radio panel hybrid. Under the previous formula, Shelton’s quickest No. 1 ascent was 10 weeks with “Honey Bee” in 2011.
 
“Cool” logs a third cumulative week atop Country Digital Songs with 71,000 sold, rises 10-7 on Country Airplay (28 million audience impressions, up 9%) and ranks as the week’s fourth-most-streamed country title (up 28%).
 
— Phoenix: French synth-alternative quartet Phoenix returns with “Entertainment,” which storms onto Hot Rock Songs at No. 25. The song starts on Rock Digital Songs at No. 22 with 14,000 downloads sold and Rock Airplay at No. 23 with 3.2 million first-week audience impressions. The track introduces Phoenix’s fifth studio set, Bankrupt! (April 23).
 
— Mariah Carey: Her new single “Almost Home” debuts at No. 18 on R&B Songs, thanks in part to 19,000 first-week downloads sold. The song, co-written and -produced by Carey and Swedish duo Stargate (Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Rihanna), with additional writing credits to Simone Porter, Justin Gray and Lindsey Ray, accompanies Disney’s upcoming “Oz the Great and Powerful,” hitting theaters March 8. An official video for the song is in the works.
