Chart Moves: Imagine Dragons, AWOLNATION Extend Lengthy Hot 100 Stays; Beyonce Bounds At R&B/Hip-Hop Radio; DJ Snake, Lil Jon Debut With ‘Turn Down For What’

As previously reported, Eminem and Rihanna rule the Billboard Hot 100 for a fourth week with “The Monster” and Miley Cyrus re-enters at No. 22 with “Adore You” following the release of the song’s video. Who else starts the new year with notable chart moves this week?

— Imagine Dragons, AWOLNATION: Imagine Dragons and AWOLNATION continue their extraordinary residences on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. With a 70th week on the Hot 100, Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” (at No. 25) passes LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live” (69 weeks) for the second-longest run in the chart’s 55-year history. Only Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” has spent more time on the ranking (76 weeks). Meanwhile, AWOLNATION’s “Sail” (No. 35) notches a 69th week on the Hot 100, tying Rimes’ hit as the third-longest-charting title all time.

As “Radioactive” continues its march toward Mraz’s mark, Imagine Dragons has since released two follow-up singles from their debut album “Night Visions,” the top title on Billboard’s 2013 year-end Top Rock Albums recap. (“Radioactive” also finished as the year-end Hot Rock Songs No. 1, while the group reigned as 2013’s top rock act.) “Demons” holds at its No. 6 Hot 100 peak this week in its 36th week on the survey, while new single “On Top of the World” bullets at No. 16 on Triple A and rises 27-25 on Alternative.

— Beyonce: Although leading “Beyonce” track “Drunk in Love,” featuring Jay-Z, falls 12-17 in its second week on the Hot 100, it continues its assault on R&B/hip-hop radio. The song lifts 9-8 in its third week on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart with a 23% gain to 19 million format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The track has claimed the chart’s Greatest Gainer award in all three of its weeks on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.

On the all-genre Hot 100 Airplay chart, “Drunk” debuts at No. 45 with 28 million in all-format audience (up 18%). Still, radio accounts for just 14% of the song’s total Hot 100 chart points. Sales comprise 47% of its total and streaming, 39%. “Drunk” more than doubles to 122,000 downloads sold (up 102%, according to Nielsen SoundScan), although it’s pushed back 21-25 on Hot Digital Songs, and holds at No. 3 on Streaming Songs (5 million U.S. streams, down 20%, according to BDS).

Meanwhile, more pop-leaning “Beyonce” track “XO” debuts on Mainstream Top 40 at No. 32 (up 94% in plays). It’s her first appearance on the chart since “Countdown” dented the list for a No. 38 peak in November 2011 and highest rank on the tally since “Best I Ever Had” reached No. 15 earlier that year.

— Bastille: The band’s multi-format domination continues, as “Pompeii” crowns Triple A. On the Hot 100, it holds at its No. 21 peak to date. The song led Alternative for four weeks and this week jumps 17-16 on Adult Top 40 and 21-19 on Mainstream Top 40. The song and group were originally heralded as far back as April 2013 in Billboard’s weekly “Bubbling Under” new artist spotlight.

— Luke Bryan: His “That’s My Kind of Night” leads Country Digital Songs for a 12th cumulative week, flying 5-1 with 123,000 downloads sold (up 278%). Meanwhile, Bryan’s current radio single “Drink a Beer” holds at No. 2 (105,000, up 102%). The songs rank at Nos. 34 and 37, respectively, on the Hot 100.

Bryan is the first male artist to double up in the Country Digital Songs chart’s top two. Previously, Taylor Swift (11 weeks, 2010-12) and Lady Antebellum (2010) monopolized the top two positions.

— DJ Snake, Lil Jon: The pair soars into the Dance/Electronic Songs top five with “Turn Down for What” (10-4). On the Hot 100, it’s the Hot Shot Debut at No. 38.

The track accepts dual honors on Dance/Electronic Songs as top Streaming Gainer (573,000 U.S. streams, nearly all from YouTube) and Digital Gainer (145,000, up 304%). Only seven other songs in the nearly year-long history of the chart have climbed to No. 4 or higher in three weeks or less; “Turn” is the first since Britney Spears vaulted 16-4 with “Work B**ch!” in its second week (Oct. 5, 2013).

— Robin Thicke: Thicke tallies his fourth Adult R&B Songs No. 1, as “For the Rest of My Life” rises 3-1. The ballad follows this year’s 17-week No. 1 smash “Blurred Lines” (featuring T.I. and Pharrell), last year’s “Love After War” (three weeks at the summit) and 2007’s 15-week topper “Lost Without U.”
