Charlotte Hornets' Miles Bridges Charged With Domestic Violence And Child Abuse

NBA player Miles Bridges has been charged with felony domestic violence and child abuse, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney.

The Charlotte Hornets forward is facing one felony count of injuring a child’s parent and two felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily harm or injury.

“Domestic violence creates physical, mental and emotional trauma that has a lasting impact on survivors,” District Attorney George Gascón said in the press release. “Children who witness family violence are especially vulnerable and the impact on them is immeasurable. Mr. Bridges will be held accountable for his actions and our Bureau of Victim Services will support the survivors through this difficult process.”

Los Angeles police arrested Bridges, 24, on June 29 after responding to a call about an argument. He was later released on a $130,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

“We are aware of the charges that were filed today against Miles Bridges. These are very serious charges that we will continue to monitor,” the Hornets said in a statement released on Twitter Tuesday night. “As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

The NBA also issued a statement: “We are aware of the charges filed today against Miles Bridges. The league is investigating the allegations.”

Bridges has two young children with Mychelle Johnson. On July 1, she posted pictures of her injuries and a medical report that said: “adult victim of physical abuse by male partner; Assault by strangulation, Brain concussion; Closed fracture of nasal bone; Contusion of rib; Multiple bruises; Strain of neck muscle.”

Johnson wrote in a now deleted Instagram post: "I hate that it has come to this, but I can't be silent anymore. I've allowed someone to destroy my home, abuse me in every way possible and traumatize our kids for life. I have nothing to prove to the world, but I won't allow anyone who could do something so horrible to have no remorse and paint a picture of something I'm not. I won't allow the people around him to continue to silence me and continue to lie to protect this person."

Johnson, 24, played college basketball with Middle Tennessee State University and Marshall University, according to the U.S. Sun. She was also a high school basketball star, leading St Joseph Catholic High School to three state championships, the paper reported. She was twice named defensive player of the year.

Bridges was the leading scorer for the Hornets last season averaging 20.2 points and seven rebounds. He was drafted by the LA Clippers in 2018 then traded to the Hornets. He is a restricted free agent. The Hornets had planned to re-sign him before the arrest, according to NBA.com.

In April, he was fined $50,000 for tossing a mouthpiece that hit a young fan. He later apologized, calling his action “unacceptable.”
