Charlamagne Tha God has come to the defense of Kevin Hart following comments made by Katt Williams labeling Hart as an “industry plant.”

During an episode on the radio host’s Brilliant Idiots podcast, Charlamagne weighed in on the tension between the two comedians, which resurfaced after Williams’ explosive Club Shay Shay podcast interview last week.

Charlamagne disagreed with Williams claims that Hart’s success was predetermined based on “deals” he had struck early in his career, and not by hard work and dues paid. The South Carolina native pointed to underperforming television and film projects that Hart was attached to before becoming a household name.

“I saw Katt say something too about Kevin Hart… [that] Kevin Hart’s come-up wasn’t organic. I totally disagree with that,” he said. “I totally disagree with that, and the reason I totally disagree with that is because we watched Kev not succeed in Hollywood. We watched his NBC sitcom, I think it was NBC, we watched his sitcom not succeed in Hollywood. We watched Soul Plane not do well.”

The sitcom Charlamagne was referring to, The Big House, premiered on ABC in 2004 and was cancelled after only six episodes. Soul Plane, which was released that same year, also starred Hart in a leading role and grossed an underwhelming $14 million at the box office, short of its $16 million budget.

The Philadelphia native has since gone on to immense success, becoming one of the most bankable comedic actors in history, with numerous box office smashes including Ride Along, Get Hard, and Night School.

Williams was critical of several of his comedic peers during his viral interview with Shannon Sharpe, including Steve Harvey, Cedric The Entertainer, Ricky Smiley, and Chris Tucker. He said that Hart was not highly regarded within the Los Angeles comedy scene and that his sudden ascent was unprecedented.

“No one in Hollywood has a memory of going to a sold-out Kevin Hart show, there being a line for him, ever getting a standing ovation at any comedy club,” Williams told Sharpe.

“He already had his deals when he got here. Have we heard of a comedian that came to L.A., and in his first year in L.A., he had his own sitcom on network television and had his own movie called ‘Soul Plane’ that he was leading? No, we’ve never heard of that before that person, or since that person. What do you think a ‘plant’ is?”

Kevin Hart has since clapped back at Williams, advising him to “get that anger” he seemingly has pent up out of him, and deeming his conduct as “sad.”
