Kelly's Thoughts
Bombshell has drummed up quite a few incendiary reactions, especially from the women that the film portrays. Former Fox News staffer Megyn Kelly took to Instagram over the weekend, posting a video of herself and other former Fox News female employees reacting to the film. Kelly wasn't involved in production at all, and shared her thoughts online.
"But while the movie Bombshell is loosely based on my experience during the sexual harassment scandal at Fox News, I have nothing to do with this film. I did not sell the rights to my story or book and only got my first look at the film once it was past the point of any possible edits, though there are certainly some I would have made. Watching this picture was an incredibly emotional experience for me, and for those with whom I saw it."
Not A Fan Of Everything
Kelly did have some negative thoughts about the film, particularly a scene where Margot Robbie's fictional character asks Charlize Theron's Kelly why she didn't do more to stop the pervasive sexual harassment. Kelly thought that scene was "bullish*t."
"When I saw that scene I thought it was shameful, because its unfactual and it is victim-shaming, and this is a movie about sexual harassment. This is sending the wrong message. You were just a real support system and I know that it wasn’t just me. It was for a lot of other people"
However, Kelly admits that she has regrets about that part of her career, so she wouldn't cut it from the film.
"I’ve looked back on my own life, every moment from that moment forward and I do wish I had done more. Even though I was powerless, even though it would’ve been a suicidal move for me career-wise, what if I had just said, ‘screw it?'"
An Oscar Contender
Bombshell has gone on to be a major awards contender, earning three Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Charlize Theron. When asked about Kelly's video, Theron explains that she was deeply moved.
"I felt that that was an incredibly sincere moment from Megyn. It hit me really deep. I felt something really real in her saying that.
We [as women] shouldn’t even be in that situation in the first place. We want more than that. We want a world where that’s not even asked. Where we are not even in that situation where we have to choose what we’re going to do in the first place. And I just don’t think that is too much to ask. I think that is a human right that we should all have. We should be able to go to work and live in a world where we’re not threatened, we’re not power-played and we’re not sexually harassed. We’re not sexually assaulted just in order to provide for our families or for ourselves."
Theron Is 'Hit Really Deep'
Theron continued, expressing her hope that the film will have an impact on the conversation around sexual harassment and help implement real change.
"I do think that there’s something cathartic in it,” she said. “But the thing I’m most grateful to them for, is the fact that they understand the weight of their stories, they understand what their stories could mean for changing this and also for other women. To do what they need to do in order to heal and to try and stop this."
