Charlie Rose Returns to ‘CBS This Morning’ Following Heart Valve Replacement Surgery

Back on Feb. 9, CBS This Morning anchor Charlie Rose took time off from the show so doctors could replace a leaking heart valve that was originally installed in 2002. On Monday, March 13, Rose marked his return to the daytime show. Among those who welcomed him back were Yankees legend Derek Jeter and President Trump. “Charlie, welcome back,” the president said in a prerecorded message. “We all missed you.”

“Welcome to CBS This Morning, and, boy, am I happy to be here,” Rose began at the top of the broadcast. “Did you get that last part?” interjected his co-anchor, Gayle King. “The president of the United States says, ‘Welcome back, Charlie.’” “You sure he’s talking about me?” joked Rose.

Rose, who went into surgery at a time of his choosing, said that the results were positive. “The interesting thing is that the surgeons told me, ‘Everything. Everything we wanted to do came out even better than we expected, and so we’re very excited in terms of what it’s going to be in terms of how you can perform,’” Rose recalled. “That’s usually what happens with Charlie Rose,” said co-anchor Norah O’Donnell. “It’s always better than what’s expected.”

“I have to do this,” Rose said later in the show. “First of all, thank you, guys, for keeping people advised as to how I was doing. … Secondly, Anthony Mason, who did a wonderful job, and thirdly the people who were enormous in terms of what they sent to me saying, ‘We think about you, we care about you. We miss you.’ All of that.”
