Charli XCX is standing up for her friend Sam Smith.

After announcing their new collaboration "In the City" earlier this month, Charli posted to TikTok on Tuesday and said she's seen many hateful comments toward Smith online, firmly condemning such behavior.

"Hi everyone. I’m about to release a song with Sam Smith, and the experience has been really interesting," said the British pop star, 35. "Never in my life have I seen someone receive so many hateful comments online. It’s been really disheartening."

Without specifying any negative remarks she's witnessed online, Charli offered support to her friend and collaborator. "At the same time, I am so proud of Sam’s ability to withstand that because I know I certainly couldn’t withstand it," she continued.

"Sam, I love you, I love our song together, and I am in awe of your strength," concluded the "Speed Drive" singer-songwriter.

Smith, 31, has not publicly acknowledged the situation.

Charli first teased "In the City" on Oct. 6, sharing a TikTok video from a recording studio. "I wanted to play you something I've been working on if you want to hear it," she said before playing a clip of the song. "It's cute!"

The collaboration features a dance-pop beat and romantic lyrics. "I never thought I would find it / But I found what I was looking for / In the city, in the dark," she sings in the teaser clip.

Smith teased their involvement with a TikTok video last week, revealing their lyrics: "I knew the night that I met you / Underneath the New York City lights / Baby, don't matter what I do / There's an angel standing by my side."

"In the City" was officially announced over the weekend, with another TikTok of Charli and Smith jamming to the song. "this one is really cute and fun and i’m so lucky to have @Sam Smith on it with me," she wrote, revealing the track's release date.

In August, Charli hinted at the collaboration in the music video for her "Speed Drive" song from the Barbie film soundtrack. In the clip, she receives a video call from Smith and says, "Wait, wait, wait, wait. Sorry. Hey Sam!"

"Hi Charli. Did you have a chance to listen to the new mix, babe? What'd you think?" asked the Grammy winner.

She replied, "I'm actually on set of a music video right now."

"Oh, OK, OK. Sorry," said Smith. "We've gotta submit it, so we can get it out."

"Maybe I can call you back right after, and we can talk. Is that good?" responded Charli.

"Love it. OK, bye!" said Smith.

"In the City" will be released on Thursday to all streaming services.
