Charli XCX Jokes She's 'Such a Bitch' to Fiancé George Daniel When They Work Together Because They're 'So Close'

PEOPLE confirmed the "Von Dutch" singer and The 1975 drummer got engaged in November

Charli XCX believes in healthy competition when it comes to studio time with her fiancé George Daniel.

In a cover story interview with Rolling Stone U.K. released May 16, the "Speed Drive" singer opened up about working with The 1975 drummer in studio for her forthcoming album BRAT.

“We want to impress each other, and we think we’re both really good, but I’m actually such a bitch in the studio with George,” Charli, 31, told the outlet. “Because we’re obviously so close, you lose everything in terms of the normal studio boundaries.”

She added, “We flow really well, and he leaves a lot of space for people to breathe and be them and do their process.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the "Von Dutch" singer discussed her forthcoming album, which is set for release on June 7, and said that at its core, it's a club record.

“Club electronic music is what makes me feel most alive. My nightmare is going to see a pop show or, like, a band,” Charli said.

“Which is funny, obviously, because: George. You can put that in; he knows how I feel about it," she said, adding of that for her, electronic music represents, "sadness and beauty and stillness — it does something to me almost chemically, I think.”

So far, Charli's released singles "360," "Von Dutch," "Cult Classics" and "B2b." Earlier this month, she released a star-studded music video for "360" including Chloë Sevigny, Julia Fox, Gabbriette Bechtel and more.

As for her relationship with Daniel, 34, Charli opened up about working with him during an appearance on Spout Podcast in December.

“We’ve done a couple of things together. He's not really all over it, but we’ve got a few ideas in the works,” she said.

Charli added: “It’s funny, I have never sort of been in a relationship with someone that I’ve worked with, so it’s like a whole new dynamic. But it’s cool. There will be a couple of songs that he’s worked on with me.”

The couple first connected in 2021 while working on the collaborative single “Spinning" with The 1975 and No Rome. Daniel later produced various songs on her 2022 album Crash, as well as the song “Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies)” for the 2022 A24 horror film Bodies Bodies Bodies.

In November, PEOPLE confirmed Charli was engaged to Daniel.

The pop star officially announced the engagement by sharing photos with the indie-pop artist and producer on her public Instagram after quietly sharing the news with a post of her engagement ring on her private Instagram account intended for her fans.
