Charlevoix Public Library to host traveling Harry Potter exhibit

CHARLEVOIX — Starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Charlevoix Public Library will be hosting a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine entitled "Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine in Harry Potter’s World."

The exhibit will take over a room on the lower level of the library. Throughout the month of September, the library is hosting numerous programs in conjunction with the exhibit.

"This museum quality exhibit explores how the Harry Potter book series incorporated magic that is based partially on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of western science, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy," said library director Ryan Deery in an email. "It also examines ethical topics such as the desire for knowledge, the effects of prejudice, and the responsibility that comes with power."

The library will be hosting the traveling exhibit from Sept. 5 through Oct. 1.

The series schedule includes:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. in the library's lobby and Coeling Center — opening reception for the National Library of Medicine’s exhibit: "Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine in Harry Potter's World"

  • Saturday, Sept. 9 from 1-3 p.m. in the youth activity center — Harry Potter Party with treats, a Hogwarts-themed scavenger hunt, crafts, and more.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room — Healing through Bees, Herbs, Spices, and Teas with Melissa Makowski, DDS and Michael Lucido, PhD

  • Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room — Basilisks and Bezoars: The Real History Behind Harry Potter with Mark Waddell, PhD

  • Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. in the Community Room — Movie Matinee: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone"

  • Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room — Modern Scientific Discovery in Medicine with Kelly Hirko, PhD, MPH

  • Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. in the Community Room — Closing Event: A2 Magic Show. Kids and families are invited to an interactive magic show performed by Jeff Wawrzaszek of A2 Magic
