Charles Melton is living life in the fast lane — and he’s leaning on the people closest to him for support.

As the actor, 33, reflects on the rollercoaster of a year he’s had thanks to his award-winning role in Netflix’s May December, he admits he’d likely be lost without his mom.

“The best part was my mom making me breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and just taking care of me,” he tells PEOPLE while at the Vanity Fair and Instagram’s A Night For Young Hollywood event in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

“You don’t get that much sleep,” Melton continues of his busy schedule, between filming May December in less than a month and life now amidst awards season. “But I just had my sister and my mom along the way [and] my publicist, who I love dearly.”

Reflecting on his time working on the film alongside his costars, he says: “Just being able to have this time with Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, Sammy, Alex, and all our producers. It was just amazing to just celebrate what we did in Georgia, those 23 days.”

The former Riverdale star has previously gushed to PEOPLE about Moore, 63, and Portman, 42, who he said “elevate everything around them.”

“The way they work, their technicality, they're masters of their craft.”

The actresses paid the same respect to him.

“He's a super interesting person — I mean, he's a college football player, then he's like, ‘I'm reading about bell hooks as visions of sexual identity and gender identity,’ ” Portman told PEOPLE of her costar. “Who are you? I love this! If this is what the new generation is like, bring it on.”

Moore, who played his onscreen wife in the film, said, “He's so handsome, and he buried that in this performance. You don't see that at all. You see a completely different person.”

Melton's costars' support can't compete with that of his mom, Sukyong, though. “What doesn't come and go is my family, and they're with me at every moment," he told PEOPLE. "These are the people that love me, that I will be with in every part of my journey in life. They speak truth to me.”

His mom is often his go-to date at industry events, too, because, in his words, "Who wouldn't want their mom to be with them?”

“She’ll always tell me, no matter how old I get, I'm always going to be her baby Charles: ‘I don't care if you have a house, and you're paying bills, and you have kids, you'll always be my baby.’ ”
