Apr. 23—HAPPY VALLEY — The historic Chapel of Rest in Happy Valley will present storyteller and musicians Michael Reno Harrell and Josh Goforth in concert on Sunday afternoon, May 5, at 4 p.m., according to a press release from Chapel of Rest Preservation Society.

The concert is part of a series of spring and fall concerts sponsored by the chapel since 1984 and hosted by the Chapel of Rest Preservation Society.

Award-winning songwriter and nationally known storyteller Michael Reno Harrell bases his work on his life experiences in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, going back eight generations. In a 50-year career, he has traveled to 44 states and several foreign countries and appearing as featured teller at the National Storytelling Festival and teller in residence at the International Storytelling Center.

At the forefront of Radio WNCW's regional music scene since the late 1990s, Reno's performances are like his granddaddy's pocket knife — "well worn and familiar, but razor sharp and with a point."

Josh Goforth grew up in Madison County surrounded by the music and stories of his ancestors. He is an accomplished storyteller and old-time, bluegrass and swing musician playing close to twenty instruments. His fiddling was featured in the film "Songcatcher" both onscreen and on the soundtrack. Goforth has performed in all 50 states and throughout Europe, Asia and Australia, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry.

Nominated for a Grammy for his 2009 release "Cutting Loose" with David Holt, Goforth has been termed a "superstar in waiting" by producer Hugh Sturgill.

Both performers can be heard together at the "acoustically perfect" Chapel of Rest, according to the press release, located at 1924 Highway 268, adjacent to the campus of The Patterson School and the Western NC Sculpture Center.

Admission is $20 and $5 for those age 12 and younger. Payment may be made at the door with cash or check, and includes a reception with the artists to follow the concert.
