Challengers is the biggest film in the United States right now.
With a $15M opening gross, it leads the domestic box office charts, beating the likes of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Civil War, and Abigail.
It’s a great showing for the steamy tennis drama, and the best of director Luca Guadagnino’s career. However, it’s not mindblowing given Challengers has a hefty $55 million budget - and that’s without factoring in marketing costs.
It is one of Amazon MGM Studios bigger releases, though, taking just three days to outgross Saltburn’s entire global theatrical box office haul. It’ll undoubtedly be a smash hit on Prime Video when it releases there in a few months, too.
It did a lot better than Boy Kills World, released in the same weekend. Reportedly the biggest-budgeted film to ever come out of South Africa, the Bill Skarsgård-led action flick bombed with a shockingly bad $1.6 million.
In terms of critical reception, Challengers has a healthy 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Click here for our Challengers review: a heated, heady spectacle with poignant vulnerability.
