Nickelback are currently on the road touring North America, though the band encountered a hiccup during a show last Thursday (August 3rd) in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

The concert seemed to be going off without a hitch until Chad Kroeger and company began the song “Animals.” Apparently, Kroeger wasn’t confident in his vocal performance up until that point, because the singer-guitarist stopped the band mid-song to address the issue and apologize.

“I can’t do this,” he said. “I cannot sit here with a fucking absolutely destroyed throat and try to make it through this show and pretend like there’s nothing fucking wrong and take your fucking money, ’cause that is wrong. I’m having a hard time hittin’ fuckin’ notes.”

He continued: “The doctor just jabbed me in the hip with some prednisone, and we all crossed our fingers backstage hoping this was gonna work. But I cannot, in good conscience, stand up here and sing these fuckin’ songs and have my voice crack and everything sound like shit. It’s driving me fucking nuts. So, I’ll tell you what. I could give it my best. I could keep just trying and we could just pull this fucker out if you want to.”

At that point, Chad’s bassist brother Mike gave him a hug, while guitarist Ryan Peake jokingly volunteered to sing for the rest of the concert. That seemed to be enough motivation for Chad to soldier on (though Nickelback would perform an abbreviated 15-song set that night).

“Fuck it,” he said. “Let’s start this [song] over again. I’m just gonna give it all I’ve got.”

Nickelback have since played another show in Milwaukee, running through a full set without any apparent problems. However, Kroeger’s vocal issues are still concerning considering the singer underwent surgery in 2015 to remove a cyst on his vocal cords. It’s worth noting that Nickelback had performed a bevy of dates as part of a busy tour itinerary in the weeks leading up to the Maryland Heights show, so Kroeger’s voice may have simply been worn out.
