Central Florida to wear space-themed helmets for homecoming

Central Florida is making a tribute to space exploration vs. East Carolina on Oct. 14.

UCF revealed the special helmets for the game on Tuesday and the website announcing them is something to behold. The helmet stripe features constellations and is in five sections. According to the site, “each section is a scaled section of the five stages of the Saturn V rocket, which carried the first astronauts to the moon in 1969.”

The UCF decal on the helmet logo is designed to look like the moon’s surface.

Central Florida was originally Florida Technological University when it was started in 1963. The school’s original nickname was the “Citronauts” to combine the citrus industry and the burgeoning space program. The Citronaut nickname lasted for just over a year before Knights — from Knights of the Pegasus — was voted in its place.
