Celestial Tiger Snares Asia Rights to Monster Chinese Hit ‘Wolf Warriors 2’
Celestial Tiger Entertainment has secured first and exclusive pay-TV rights for patriotic Chinese action blockbuster “Wolf Warriors 2” across multiple Asian territories. The film is the highest-grossing movie of all time at the Chinese box office.
The deal covers Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines, and also covers pay-per-view, video-on-demand and over-the-top rights for CTE’s channels, Celestial Movies and cHK. The rights were represented by sales agent CMC Pictures.
CTE also acquired Chinese fantasy adventure film “Wukong” from CMC. It stars Eddie Peng Yu-yan as the formidable Wukong (alias The Monkey King), who is unwilling to bow down to his own destiny and sets out to rebel against the gods.
Directed by and starring Wu Jing, “Wolf Warriors 2” is an action-packed sequel about a former Chinese special forces operative whose mission is to rescue Chinese nationals in an African country occupied by mercenaries. It was released on July 25 and remains on screens, having made $853 million so far.
Celestial Movies, which has multiple output deals with Chinese-language rights holders, will soon air a slate of other Chinese hits, including Jackie Chan’s two action comedies “Railroad Tigers” and “Kung Fu Yoga,” as well as Andy Lau’s revenge action thriller “Shockwave.”
