French luxury house Maison Margiela, founded in 1988, is known for pushing the envelope with couture creations that highlight the dark, romantic and whimsical.
John Galliano — the label’s current creative directory and a veteran of iconic labels Dior and Givenchy — cranked up the heat for multiple custom confections at the 2024 Met Gala’s “Garden of Time” dress code.
On the first Monday in May, “Game of Thrones” star Gwendoline Christie brought the drama in a blood orange velvet gown and a handcrafted tulle opera coat. Christie previously had a viral moment with Maison Margiela when she got all dolled up to walk in the brand’s Haute Couture show in Paris this February.
“Challengers” leading lady and Met Gala co-chair Zendaya earned another feather in her cap wearing a fantastical bias-cut gown with a sage green satin bodice, iridescent stripes and bushels of grapes.
Fellow co-chair and Puerto Rican hitmaker Bad Bunny hit the carpet in the label’s suit and Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela cloven-hooved Tabi boots. The look was inspired by inspired by the J.G. Ballard story that lent its title to the gala’s dress code.
After the Met Gala red carpet, pop princess Ariana Grande shed her mother of pearl Loewe gown to perform for her fellow attendees, clad in a corseted design that looked like a watercolor painting come to life.
