Noel Fielding played a cruel trick on Joel Dommett when he announced the comedian had won Star Baker on The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off .
The Masked Singer presenter joined Queer Eye’s Tan France, actress Caroline Quentiin and tennis player Johanna Konta on the latest celebrity edition of the Channel 4 baking show – which was actually won by stylist France.
Announcing the winner co-host Fielding said: “The winner of this week’s Star Baker is... Joel. No, it’s Tan.”
The other celebrities all exclaimed, “That’s so mean!”
Comedian Dommett, 34, said: “Noel played a cruel trick on me. There was a moment - a quarter of a second - where I thought I’d won.”
Fashion designer France was in fact the winner of the Star Baker apron. Despite his sloppy eclairs he won the Technical with his symmetrical Battenberg cake and impressed the judges by making his own fondant icing for his Showstopper.
For their Showstopper the celebrities were asked to make a cake that represented their greatest fear.
Dommett confessed to being scared of heights and made a towering diving board of biscuits above a cake swimming pool topped with blue jelly.
As he carried his creation to the judge’s table his icing model of himself toppled into the pool.
Judge Prue Leith was critical of his use of biscuit instead of cake but very much enjoyed the swimming pool jelly made with Blue Curacao liqueur.
Men Behaving Badly star Quentin, 59, made a rat-shaped cake while Star Baker France made his own face looking old and wrinkly, as he admitted he was terrified of ageing.
Tennis professional Johanna Konta, 28, made a chocolate cake in the shape of her pet sausage dog who she said she would be terrified of losing.
Hollywood told her: “That’s a delicious cake. It doesn’t look good, but it tastes amazing.”
The show featured the story of YouTube star Daniel Thomas who died aged 32 in October 2018 after battling a rare form of cancer called sarcomatoid carcinoma. He documented his cancer treatment under the name PeeWeeToms and had more than 150,000 subscribers when he passed away, just one month after marrying girlfriend Becca.
The celebrity spin-off of the hit baking show is in aid of Stand Up To Cancer.
