Celebrities and Rock Stars Memorialized Rush Drummer Neil Peart On Social Media
Legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart died of brain cancer earlier this week, and it wasn’t long before his fellow rock stars and celebrity fans began taking to social media to share memories of the virtuosic musician.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who was inspired by Peart to become a drummer himself and inducted the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, memorialized his late idol in a statement. “Today, the world lost a true giant in the history of rock & roll,” he wrote. “An inspiration to millions with an unmistakable sound who spawned generations of musicians (like myself) to pick up two sticks and chase a dream. A kind, thoughtful, brilliant man who ruled our radios and turntables not only with his drumming, but also his beautiful words.”
Grohl told Rolling Stone in 2013 of meeting Peart as the two rehearsed for the Rock Hall induction ceremony, and shared a deeply sweet story about his first interaction with his hero:
I was coming to rehearsal and I was meeting Neil for the first time, and this man was as influential as any religion or any hero or any person in someone’s life. He said, ‘So nice to meet you. Can I make you a coffee?’ And he made me a coffee, man,” Grohl said in 2013. “And later on that night, I went to dinner and had a couple glasses of wine, and I started fucking crying because my hero made me a fucking coffee. It was unbelievable, man. So that’s kind of how this whole experience has been.
He’s not the only music legend with a fond memory of Peart from the 2013 Rock Hall ceremony. Public Enemy’s Chuck D took to Twitter to share a story about Peart from the same event, and other famous fans joined in memorializing the late great drummer.

At the end of a crazy @rockhall night in 2013 where @rushtheband & @PublicEnemyFTP were inducted. It was just myself & Neil PEart alone talkin & laughing low in relief the long night was over-a small table backstage sharing a unique moment without much word. Rest in Beats my man

He was not only the incredible drummer in @rushtheband, #NeilPeart wrote their brilliant lyrics as well. “All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted. Not so coldly charted, it’s really just a question of your honesty. Yeah, your honesty.” Farewell, Icon... https://t.co/A0AhkRQZAx

I just heard about Neil Peart passing. I feel real bad about this - he was way too young. Neil was one of the great drummers and he’ll be missed. Love & mercy to Neil’s family.

Oh man... Neil Peart. Every drummer just ran to their kit to bust out Tom Sawyer. His dedication and RE-dedication to his craft is a lesson in always improving. Never be complacent. You can ALWAYS be better. R.I.P.
