Celebrating John Witherspoon: David Letterman, Cedric the Entertainer, more attend funeral

Hollywood is celebrating the life of actor and comedian John Witherspoon.

Stars like Cedric the Entertainer, David Letterman, George Wallace and Chris Tucker gathered at Forest Lawn National Park in Glendale, Calif., on Tuesday for the actor's funeral.

Witherspoon’s manager Alex Goodman confirmed a week prior that he died at 77 in Los Angeles. No cause of death was released.

Witherspoon had a prolific career, co-starring in three “Friday” films, appearing on “The Wayans Bros.” television series and voicing the grandfather in “The Boondocks” animated series. His film roles included “Vampire in Brooklyn” and “Boomerang,” and he was a frequent guest on “Late Show with David Letterman.”

For many, his most recognizable role was “Pops,” Ice Cube’s father in the stoner comedy “Friday” and its two sequels, a crude but affectionate father trying to guide his son to be better.

Comedian Bill Bellamy shared a selfie from backstage that included Cedric the Entertainer, Tucker, Chante Moore and D.L. Hughley.

"#Backstage celebrating the life of @johnnywitherspoon !!!" Bellamy captioned the photo. "One of the nicest and talented people in the game!!! So much FUNNY IN THIS PICTURE !!!!"

In clips recorded by NBC Los Angeles, Witherspoon's son, J.D., joked that his dad would be "so mad if he know how much money we spent on this."

David Letterman, J.D.'s godfather, gave the opening monologue, NBC reported.

"I've known John for 45 years. Forty-five years. He and I met at a – I think it was a Scientology mixer – years and years ago," Letterman said to raucous laughter.
