Celebrate 'Weed Day' with TV's Memorable Marijuana Moments
It’s April 20 (a.k.a. 4/20) and people around the world will be celebrating “Weed Day.” In its honor, the video above, running four minutes and 20 seconds, highlights some of television’s most memorable marijuana moments.
The origin of “420” as a code for the consumption of cannabis has been linked to several things, but multiple sources credit a group of high school students from San Rafael, California for bringing the term 420 into the lexicon in 1971. Apparently the teens met daily at 4:20 p.m. to smoke up, and began using 420 as shorthand for the time.
Obviously, the video includes clips from stoner-approved series like That ‘70s Show and Broad City (plus “King of Cannabis” Snoop Dogg’s cameo on Weeds). Some of the pot-smokers in this video, however, might surprise viewers. Even good girl Peggy Olsen from Mad Men wants to get high, and declares, “I wanna smoke some marijuana.”
The subject of marijuana use is also tackled by classic TV shows like Dragnet, Saved By The Bell, Roseanne, and Home Improvement — leading to some very hilarious moments that made the cut.
And the highly debated topic of medical marijuana use was addressed on The Simpsons, when Homer is given a prescription for weed to help him with an eye injury.
But pot smoking on TV isn’t just left for humans. South Park features Towelie (the stoner towel) and the titular character of FX’s Wilfred was a foul-mouthed, pot-loving pooch.
