Celebrate Pi Day with pie (of course): Here are 5 of our Memphis favorites

March 14 marks the annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi), which is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The trillion-digit ratio is rounded to 3.14.

We may not be mathematicians, but we love any excuse to eat pie.

Here are five of our favorites in Memphis.

Muddy's Bake Shop: Cocoa Crackle Pie

The Cocoa Crackle Pie at Muddy's Bake Shop is a chocolate lover's dream. Owner Kat Gordon has created a rich chocolate pie with a fudgy interior and a crackly top. We like to serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Fun tidbit: The pie was originally called the Cocoa Chanel Pie. "I knew we had really made it when Chanel contacted us and asked us to not use the pun 'Cocoa Chanel,'" Gordon said.

Char: Pecan Pie

Char makes one of the most delicious pecan pies we have tasted. Baked in a tart pan, this thin pecan pie is the perfect ratio of chopped pecans and filling. Each generous serving at the restaurant comes a la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Whole pies are available for purchase year-round. All you have to do is call the restaurant 24 hours in advance of when you want your pie.

Makeda's: Lemon Icebox Pie

Two locations: 2370 Airways Blvd. and 301 Jefferson Ave.; makedascookies.com

What makes the Lemon Icebox Pie a standout is the fact that the crust is made with Makeda's famous "butteriffic" butter cookies. The creamy tart lemon filling literally melts in your mouth. The pie is available by the slice or by the whole pie.

Our advice: Keep one in your freezer for last-minute entertaining (or a late-night snack).

The Pie Folks: Slap Yo Mama Chocolate Cream Pie

Just like the name says, the Chocolate Cream Pie at The Pie Folks is so good you will want to "Slap Yo Mama." This decadent and creamy chocolate pie has won numerous awards at the National Pie Championships.

Like all their pies, it is available by the slice as well as a half or whole pie. A gluten-free version is also available.

Hog & Hominy: Peanut Butter Pie

The Peanut Butter Pie at Hog and Hominy is a marriage between a peanut butter pie and banana pudding. This layered dessert combines two iconic Southern desserts into one decadently delicious treat. The Nilla wafer-crusted pie is topped with freshly whipped cream and a dusting of crumbled peanut brittle. It's served by the slice at the restaurant.

Our advice: Order it with a slice of the equally delicious chocolate Whopper "Carol's Delightful Smile" Pie.
