Celebrate National Chicken Fried Steak Day at these El Paso restaurants

Did you know National Chicken Fried Steak Day is Thursday, Oct. 26? A day to enjoy a Texas-sized tenderized and breaded beef smothered in country gravy.

Sound delicious? It's a hearty meal that can be made for breakfast with fried eggs or for dinner with a side of mashed potatoes and more gravy.

The Southern comfort food is believed to have its origins with German and Austrian immigrants who settled in Texas during the 19th century. They made their native Austrian recipe, known as wiener schnitzel, which is veal or pork dipped in eggs and breadcrumbs and then pan fried, according to the Texas State Historical Association Website.

For El Pasoans, it might be popular as it's reminiscent of the milanesa, a similarly breaded filet of pork or beef.

Here are some places to enjoy a hearty chicken fried steak in El Paso.

Black Bear Diner

The relatively new Black Bear Diner in El Paso, 1295 Horizon Blvd., offers a tasty, 10-ounce tender Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs breakfast for $15.99. It comes with your choice of hash browns, country red potatoes or creamy grits. And if that's not enough, you can also choose from pancakes or biscuits.
