CBS Sets 2024 Premiere Dates For Delayed Scripted Series, Confirms ‘Matlock’ & ‘Poppa’s House’ Move To Next Season

CBS has become the first broadcast network to unveil its post-strike midseason schedule featuring all returning and two new scripted series whose production was delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The announcement comes five days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA work stoppage. Since then, network and studios have been firming up return-to-production plans.

The rollout kicks off immediately after CBS’ Feb. 11 Super Bowl telecast with the premiere of new drama Tracker. As Deadline reported last week, the drama starring Justin Hartley is among the first scripted series slated to start production after Thanksgiving to be able to make its high-profile launch slot, which was announced in May.
All CBS returning scripted series, including the FBI and NCIS franchises, Young Sheldon and The Neighborhood, will debut their new seasons the week of Feb. 12. As Deadline reported, the strike-impacted seasons will consist of 10-13 episodes running Feb-May, which also is the case at CBS. For instance, The Neighborhood and CSI: Vegas will do 10 episodes, the FBIs 13. There are two exceptions, including CBS’ flagship comedy Young Sheldon, which will air 14 or 15 episodes (still TBD).
CBS’ midseason schedule — which will be promoted during the Super Bowl as well as NFL Playoff games in January and The Grammys on Feb 4 — closely resembles the network’s original fall lineup announced in May that did not factor in a potential strike impact. The main difference is Tracker replacing fellow new drama Matlock starring Kathy Bates on Sundays. (Matlock was supposed to air at 8 PM, Tracker will air at 9 PM, following The Equalizer, which will keep its Sunday 8 PM berth.)
Also as Deadline reported, Matlock, a reboot of the classic series, and the new Damon Wayans-Damon Wayans Jr. comedy Poppa’s House are being pushed to the 2024-25 season. As a result of limited shelf space in midseason due to the strike-related production delays and longer prep time and scheduling runway needed for new series, most upcoming scripted shows ordered in May for this season will move to the next one.

Of the four new scripted series picked up by CBS for 2023-24, two — Tracker and The Good Wife offshoot Elsbeth — are launching this season.
To accommodate an extended prep/pre-production time, Elsbeth will debut two weeks later than the rest of the CBS scripted lineup. That way, the series starring Carrie Preston will also avoid the crowded premiere week and benefit from extra promotion. Tracker repeats will air in Elsbeth‘s Thursday 10 PM slot for those two weeks.

Reality veterans Survivor and The Amazing Race will launch their new seasons in March for a consecutive run of original episodes into May.
