CBS to broadcast hourlong Bob Barker primetime tribute special on Thursday

“The Price is Right: A Tribute to Bob Barker,” a new hourlong special paying tribute to the longtime animal activist and host of “The Price is Right,” will be broadcast on CBS and concurrently streamed on Paramount+ this Thursday (August 31)  at 8 p.m. Drew Carey, who succeeded Barker as host of the game show after 35 years and was a longtime fan and friend, will host the special honoring the life and career of Barker, who died last Saturday at 99.

Barker hosted “Price is Right” – daytime TV’s longest-running game show – from 1972 to 2007. His animal advocacy was front and center at the end of each broadcast, when he would sign off with, “Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered.” He won 18 Daytime Emmy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, also being elected to the TV Academy Hall of Fame in 2004. He was also inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2008.

SEEGame show giant Bob Barker, longtime host of ‘The Price is Right,’ dead at 99

“This tribute to the legendary Bob Barker will bring back great memories for generations of ‘The Price is Right’ fans who loved Bob, his humor, his ability to connect with contestants and his innate talent for making the most out of every moment,” said Margot Wain, CBS’s senior VP of daytime programs. “Bob was one of a kind. He’ll be remembered as an extraordinary host, a devoted animal activist, and, we he would put it, ‘a loyal friend and true.’ We’re so pleased to be able to salute his many accomplishments and honor his memory in this way.”

The tribute will feature a vast array of on-camera moments from throughout Barker’s more than a half century in television. They will include his first appearance in ’72 on what was then called ‘The New Price is Right”; introducing the game Plinko to contestants and viewers for the first time; and his final appearance on “Price is Right” in 2007. It will also feature the moment in 2007 when Adam Sandler read his poem “Ode to Bob Barker” during a CBS “50 Years in Television” salute to the host that year. And there will be numerous video montages of emotional “Price is Right” contestants jumping for joy and pulling Barker into their orbit after the call to “Come on down!”.
