Lawmen, which debuted on Paramount+ last Sunday (read recaps of Episodes 1 and 2 here), chronicles its titular character’s “rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi,” according to the official logline. “Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family.”
David Oyelowo (Nightingale) stars as Reeves. The cast also includes Lauren E. Banks (City on a Hill), Shea Whigham (Gaslit), Dennis Quaid (Vegas) and Mo Brings Plenty (Yellowstone). The series’ executive producers include Oyelowo, Chad Feehan (Ray Donovan) and Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone).
Though originally billed as a spinoff of the Yellowstone prequel 1883, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a standalone anthology series in the Yellowstone universe. “For me, once I learned some of the things I didn’t know about Bass’ life, and decided where we wanted to start the story and where we wanted to end the story, it preceded 1883,” Feehan recently told TVLine.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ remaining episodes will roll out weekly on Paramount+.
