Cause determined in Hagerstown 7-Eleven fire

A fire that closed a longtime 7-Eleven on Hagerstown's Dual Highway this week was caused by an electric space heater, Hagerstown Fire Marshal Dale Fishack said Friday.

The space heater was in the office area in a front corner of the store at 1623 Dual Highway, Fishack said. The insurance company will probably do its own investigation to determine what specifically went wrong with the heater, he said.

An employee who was taken to Meritus Medical Center on Thursday morning for smoke inhalation was treated and released, Fishack said.

Fishack said he's working with 7-Eleven's corporate office to determine the value of the lost inventory. The corporation owns the building, he said.

A representative for 7-Eleven could not immediately be reached.

The longtime convenience store, which also has a gas station, is on the west side of the Dual Highway near the intersection with Edgewood Drive.

Fishack texted that the 7-Eleven has been at that site since 1982. He said he remembers stopping in the store in 1987 when he was a Hagerstown Junior College student needing a snack.
