It's Cate Blanchett vs. feminists in FX's first Mrs. America trailer
It takes an army to fight for the women’s liberation movement. So, FX’s Mrs. America trailer rolls out Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Margo Martindale, and Tracey Ullman to take on Cate Blanchett.
The FX presentation for the Television Critics Association winter press tour brought us some renewals (lots of renewals, actually), show updates, new looks, and this first footage of the stacked-on-stacked celebrity cast for the limited series.
Mrs. America stars Blanchett in her first (ever!) series role as Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative woman who led the backlash against the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. There’s also Byrne as Gloria Steinem, Aduba as the first black woman elected to United States Congress Shirley Chisholm, Banks as feminist activist Jill Ruckelshaus, Martindale as Congresswoman Bella Abzug, and Ullman as Betty Friedan, a co-founder with Gloria, Shirley, and Bella of the National Women’s Political Caucus.
The nine-episode miniseries seeks to portray the rise of America’s Moral Majority through the eyes of these women. “The Libbers want to create a sex-neutral, feminist, totalitarian nightmare,” Blanchett’s Phyllis claims in the trailer. Well, to that, Byrne’s Gloria says, “Revolutions are messy.”
Sarah Paulson plays a conglomerate of real-life figures as the character Alice, while the series, penned by Mad Men scribe Dahvi Waller, also features John Slattery and James Marsden. Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck helmed the first two episodes.
Mrs. America will premiere this April 15 on FX on Hulu, as part of FX’s new push to premiere original programs exclusively on the streaming platform.
