'Borderlands,' based on the popular video game of the same name, releases in theaters August 9

Cate Blanchett is pulling off a space-faring heist in her new movie.

On Wednesday, Lionsgate released the first trailer for her new movie Borderlands, an adaptation of the best-selling Gearbox Software video game series directed by Eli Roth (Thanksgiving).

The movie's trailer meets Blanchett's character, an outlaw named Lilith, and her companions — former soldier Roland (Kevin Hart), pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina (Barbie's Ariana Greenblatt), Tina’s bodyguard Krieg (Florian Munteanu), scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and robot Claptrap (Jack Black) — as they prepare to undertake a significant heist, fighting their way through a number of odd landscapes and villains along the way.

In the movie, Lilith, a fugitive, makes a homecoming to her planet Pandora in order to search for the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), according to an official synopsis. She then bands together with the rest of the cast in order to find the girl — though much stands in the group's way.

"These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power," reads an official synopsis for the movie. "The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other."

Deadline reported that Blanchett was tapped to play Lilith back in May 2020, with the rest of her on-screen crew signing on the following year. Filming began April 2021 in Hungary and wrapped in June. Near the end of shooting, Curtis, 65, shared a glimpse of the Tár star in character as Lilith on Instagram
