Cate Blanchett Hasn't Been Seen With Her Husband in Ages & It's Drawing Meryl Streep Comparisons

Cate Blanchett is one of those stars who does great work, shows up on a red carpet to support her project, and then disappears from the limelight. However, her most recent appearance at the BAFTAs on Sunday started a curious buzz from fans, who noticed that husband Andrew Upton was nowhere to be seen, and she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring.

The 54-year-old Australian star hasn’t been wearing her ring at all lately, so it’s led some people to wonder what’s going on with their marriage. A source seems to be hinting that something is amiss. “Seeing Cate without her ring has sent shockwaves through their friends. For the first time they’re wondering if things aren’t so rosy,” they shared to Woman’s Day, via the Daily Mail. The last time Blanchett and her 58-year-old playwright husband were seen together was in August 2023 while on vacation in Ibiza, Spain.

What makes a possible split seem even more plausible is that the couple has put their longtime Melbourne, Australia estate up for auction. They are hoping to get anywhere from $2.25million – $2.45million in the sale, according to the Daily Mail. They still have joint properties in Sydney and East Sussex, England, though. But all of this secrecy surrounding the state of their marriage suddenly is ringing bells. It feels like how Meryl Streep handled her separation from husband Don Gummer.

Streep announced in 2023 that she and Gummer had been separated for six years — and nobody knew it except for their very discreet inner circle. Their announcement simply stated, per People: “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.” Everyone seemed to have missed that Streep hadn’t been seen in public with her husband in five years — their last outing together was the 2018 Oscars. While a pandemic probably helped them hide their marital situation, the couple still shares their home in New York and Los Angeles — it’s all about the separate bedrooms.

“Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a source told Closer magazine last fall. If Blanchett and Upton are going down a similar path toward a platonic relationship, perhaps they are taking a page from Streep and Gummer’s “friendly-terms” friendship where a partnership doesn’t always have to involve romance.
