Casualty star Amanda Henderson has addressed her character's shocking farewell to the BBC soap, which aired last month.

The actress played Robyn Miller for a decade before producers decided to kill the nurse off in a tragic accident. Speaking on The Double L Show, Henderson clarified she didn't have a say in Robyn's fate, but understands her death was crucial in kicking off a new subplot.

"No. It was very much their decision for me to leave," she admitted.

"Their reasoning was that they needed a character who was really well-loved to go to kick off the nurses strike and all of Jacob's story now, which I can't tell you about as I don't know any more."

She continued: "It wasn't my decision to leave, it was their decision. For a long time, I thought maybe it was something I'd done. I was thinking, 'Does somebody hate me, is that why?'

"I can now understand and see why it was Robyn that had to go.

"Ten years on a show is a really long time, and I am excited to see what else is out there."

Speaking about future roles, Henderson isn't afraid of being typecast now she's left the ED for good.

"I left Casualty playing a nurse and then I went into panto and played a cow. I don't necessarily feel that was a typecast role!" she said.

"There's a lot of things I know I can do and there is a lot of characters I'd love to play – some that have been written, some that haven't yet. There's loads out there."

She was tight-lipped about Jacob's exit, a storyline explored amid ongoing problems with an understaffed ED and the emotional toll of Robyn's death.

"[Actor Charles Venn] posted something about leaving, but I know what's happened in regards to that," Henderson said. "I won't say anything as I don't feel I can. I do know a bit of what's happening with that, though."

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
