Alan Cumming announced the cast of season three of The Traitors today, and one name caught our eye: Lord Ivar Mountbatten, a member of the extended British royal family.

Mountbatten, 61, is the son of David Mountbatten, 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven, and Janet Mercedes Bryce. Through his father, he's a second cousin of King Charles and a first cousin once removed of Prince Philip.

Mountbatten has something of an interesting biography. In 1994, he married Penelope Thompson, and they had three daughters: Ella (b. 1996), Alix (b. 1998), and Luli (b. 2002). Mountbatten and Thompson separated in 2010 and divorced in 2011, and in 2016, he came out as gay—making him the first member of the extended royal family to come out. He married flight attendant James Coyle in a private ceremony in 2018, again making history as the first member of the royal family to marry in a same-sex wedding.

When he was asked about his decision to come out and how it impacted the royals, he said he hoped it was a good thing, but added, "They don't really talk about it. I mean, the royals, they don't communicate very well."

Mountbatten also shared that he's not too involved with the royals anymore. "The family has got very large," he told Tatler in 2019. "When we were younger we went to royal events all the time. But now that everyone has had children, quite rightly everything has slimmed down." He is still close with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, who are godparents to his daughters.

The Traitors isn't Mountbatten's first reality TV show; he previously starred in Keeping Up With the Aristocrats, a "light-hearted behind-the-scenes series about Britain's most prominent aristocratic dynasties." On The Traitors, he'll compete against reality TV stars from shows like Survivor, The Real Housewives, and RuPaul's Drag Race.

"This is sure to be the most treacherous season yet," Cumming said in his cast announcement. Filming is currently underway in Scotland, and no premiere date has been revealed yet.

While we wait, the first two seasons are now streaming on Peacock:
